Same-Sex Ballroom Couples Welcomed Here
While we here at Arizona Ballroom Champions support all types of dance partners, same-sex ballroom dancing hasn't always been accepted.
In 2014, for example, members of the British Dance Council considered changing their rules to define a partnership as "one man and one woman" for all amateur and professional competitions.
Why? We don't know. All we know is that they must not have been able to predict how beautifully artistic and passionate the dramatic Dancing With The Stars routine set to the tantalizing opera Carmen would be four years later.
Dancing With The Stars
In 2016, Dancing With The Stars debuted its first same-sex ballroom dancing performance. Full House star Jodie Sweetin danced with her partner Keo Motsepe and America's Next Top Model star Nyle DiMarco danced with his partner Peta Murgatroyd, proving that same-sex ballroom dancing can not only be accepted, but it can be fun, engaging and sexy.
This particularly resonated with Tonioli, who has spoken out about being bullied as a gay youth in his village. He told the judges and the crowd that, "You gave a message that is very important." It was so important, in fact, that the show led to the increase in popularity for same-sex ballroom dancing in the Bay Area.
Same-Sex Dancing Gains Popularity
You won't only catch same-sex couples dancing on celebrity TV shows. For example, dance instructors Trevor Copp and Jeff Fox performed at a TEDx talk in Montreal after creating a form of ballroom dancing where partners take turns to lead all with the goal of breaking down gender roles.
Copp summed up our ideas on same-sex dancing when he said, during the talk, that, "Classic Latin and ballroom dancing isn't just a system of dancing; it's a way of thinking, of being, of relating to each other that captured a whole period's values."
Variations of ballroom and other dance styles have begun to appear all over the world to include same-sex partners, encompassing and embodying the idea that dance, and any artistic expression, is ultimately about the beauty of life, society and human nature. And, that beauty includes everybody, regardless of race, gender, age or sexual orientation.
No Partner? No Problem!
Date night for gay and lesbian couples just got even better. If you don't have a partner (or if your partner simply doesn't like to dance), don't worry! All single gay and lesbian people are welcome to come and learn in a relaxed environment from professionals and members of the LGBT community.
By taking same-sex dancing lessons you are allowed the freedom to learn how to lead, follow or both. We believe this ultimately makes for more well-rounded dancers and relieves some of the stress on people who don't quite fall into the category of their gender-based role (i.e. men always lead and women always follow).
You Will Always Have a Home at Arizona Ballroom Champions
Now, more than ever, we want to make sure all same-sex partners feel comfortable taking ballroom dance lessons in a setting that makes them feel welcomed, relaxed and respected.
To us, it doesn't matter who leads or follows. We believe ballroom dancing should be fun and that you should be able to share the experience with a partner of your choosing. Get started today to reap the benefits of dance and celebrate the you that you are.
